Travel Edition: How to Avoid Bedbugs While Traveling

If you’ve had the misfortune of dealing with bedbugs before, you know that they can be extremely clingy. They are also great hitchhikers; they can easily move from one room to another, climb into your luggage and any belongings you may have left on the bed, in just one night.

For bedbugs, hotel rooms are perfect homes. The continuous supply of fresh hosts and makes these facilities good hiding spots for bedbugs.

So, here are some ways to avoid bedbugs from infesting your belongings while you’re travelling.

Inspect Your Room

Check your hotel room carefully for bedbugs before unpacking your luggage and climbing onto the bed. Check if the beds have bedbug proof covers for the mattresses.

Check the edges of the mattress and the corners of the bed for small brown bugs that look like tiny cockroaches. If they appear reddish and release a pungent smell when you squish them, those tiny creatures are, in fact, bedbugs.

You should also examine the carpets and curtains in your room. If you do find any bedbugs, change rooms immediately or check into another hotel.

Use an Elevated Surface to Place Your Luggage

Even if you’ve inspected your room for bedbugs, avoid keeping your luggage on the floor. By placing you bags on the floor, you’ll allow bedbugs from other rooms to creep into your belongings.

Bedbugs can also be brought into hotels by other travelers. Therefore, to prevent those ghastly bugs from clinging on to your luggage, place your bags on luggage rack or on top of the dresser.

Use Airtight Plastic for Wrapping Your Bags

Bedbugs love to hide in porous and dark materials, which is why your luggage makes for the perfect spot to hide and multiply in. By tightly wrapping your bags with air tight plastic covers, you can stop bedbugs from gaining access into your luggage.

Suitcases belonging to other travelers can also harbor bedbugs. Therefore, it is important that your luggage is properly wrapped before you get to the airport.

Wash Your Clothes before Checking Out

Before checking out, consider sending over your clothes to the laundry. Washing clothes will help get rid of any bedbugs that may have hidden in the crevices of collars, sleeves and the pockets.

If you suspect you may have brought bed bugs back home, immediately seek help of a professional exterminator service to get rid of these pesky little creatures.
