5 Signs Your Home Has Cockroach Infestation

A cockroach infestation is often hard to detect on account of cockroaches being nocturnal animals. While mostly cockroaches prefer to live in warm and moist places such as drain pipes and sewers, often, they find their way inside our homes, mostly staying behind sinks and refrigerators.

While you can take care of the occasional roach crawling around your kitchen, a serious infestation is a cause for concern, as the critters carry and spread diseases and infections.

If you suspect an infestation in your home, be on the lookout for these five signs.

Cockroach Droppings

Cockroaches leave droppings in stale water that has been sitting in place for a while. If you see small cylindrical excrements—that look like coffee grounds—around the sink or below the dishwasher, you have a roach problem.

The quantity of these droppings and how often you see them are good indicators of the seriousness of the problem.

Eggs and Skin

Shedding is a normal part of a cockroach’s growth cycle. You’ll see the remnants of this process near their sheltering space. While an immature cockroach sheds skin, an adult lays eggs that can be identified from their oval shape and dark brown color.

It’s crucial to inspect small gaps and spaces regularly so you can get rid of the eggs before they hatch.

Smear Marks

Check for brown marks along horizontal surfaces and junctions which cockroaches are likely to scuttle along. The marks are highly visible in damp areas and still water

Multiple Sightings

The nocturnal nature of cockroaches means that they’ll only come out at night or stay in dark spots. If you’ve been seeing them roaming around during the day, a pest control treatment is in order.

You can also find their hiding spot by checking in the bathrooms, kitchen cupboards, the laundry room and spots near drainage systems and pipe openings.

Unpleasant Odor

You may not be familiar with the unusual odor produced by the lingering presence of cockroaches if you haven’t had an infestation before, but when you couple it with the above-mentioned warnings, you’ll know that it’s a symptom of a cockroach infestation.

Cockroaches leave germs on everything they come in contact with so make sure that you wash all kitchen ware before use and throw away infected and uncovered food items.

If your home is showing all or at least three of these warning signs, it’s time to call a pest control service.

Call us immediately at 1-800-948-7378 for treatment or prevention of another infestation. We serve in Columbus Ohio and can be contacted here.
